Successful Trip and a Thank You to Marilyn

My Mom and I are back and what a trip! It was so much fun and we had a great time. Lucas and Sarah are now getting settled into their first place (although they have a lot of unpacking yet to do!) and I think they will be really happy there.
Here is a snap of their apartment complex. They are very close to the university so they won't have far to walk when it is cold and snowy or when it is raining. They also live right on the bus route so heading out to shop for groceries will not be a problem.
Both Lucas and Sarah sends a big thank you to Marilyn. Marilyn is a friend of mine that lives in Hawaii and a few weeks ago she generously sent a fleece panel from the University of Hawaii.
She was hoping I could do something with it for Lucas and Sarah and their new place. Seeing they are in a university, they fell in love with it.
I decided to add a dark green backing to it and side panels to make it a little wider and it turned out perfect. They love the finished blanket and it now has found a permanent place on the back of their couch. It will be so toasty to cuddle under this winter when the snow is blowing.
It feels good to be home and our routine will return to normal but I miss them both already! I am relieved that they are settled and content, ready to tackle what life throws at them. We wish them the best! Love you both!

Thrifty Thursday

While my Mom and I have been here in Thunder Bay helping Lucas and Sarah move, there have been items of furniture that they needed so off to the thrift stores we went! I am proud of both of them and how they felt about buying used. Some young adults their age would want all new items and the best and most expensive but these two want to save their money and use it for other things.
Thunder Bay had more thrift stores than I realized and what fun we had! Here are a few pictures of our adventures .... will have to show you some of the items they picked up at another time as the apartment is so full right now, it is difficult to take pictures!
Heading back tomorrow after taking Lucas and Sarah to pick up some groceries. I am really going to miss spending time with them.

I Found the Buttons

Remember when I showed you this post? Well, I found buttons that I fell in love with and thought they would be perfect on the cowl.
Finally complete and I really like how it turned out. It is all ready for when the weather turns cold again ... but I am happy to wait to wear it. I want some hot weather first!

Tuesday's Tip

Picture this .... you decide to do something special for your family one afternoon and make a dessert they all love. Halfway through the recipe, you realize you do not have any chocolate baking squares!
Here is a identical and cheaper substitute ..... it also eliminates extra ingredients in your pantry.
For each square, mix together 3 tablespoons of cocoa with 2 teaspoons of shortening.
First take a small saucepan and using low heat melt the shortening. After the shortening is melted whisk in the cocoa until smooth. Cool slightly and use as directed in the recipe. If you need two or three squares, simply double or triple the recipe. Quick and easy!
Viola, the dessert will be baked and your family will be happy!
