Filling the Freezer

Hunting season .... we are meat eaters in our family.  When we hunt, we hunt to feed the family, not for the sport.

We have great respect for Mother Nature and all she provides for us.  This year however, was a bust.  Hunting season is over for another year.  No deer were shot.  Our freezer will now have to be filled with beef, chicken and pork on sale from the grocery store instead.

Word around these parts is the overabundance of wolves which in turn chase the deer away.  A neighbor stopped by last week and informed us that when he was passing by earlier the day before a large grey wolf was spotted leaving our driveway.

My morning walks will need to be kept close to the house and definitely during daylight hours.  Our pets will need to be kept indoors for the time being. I hope the wolves move along soon and the deer move back in.  There is nothing prettier than watching the deer make their way along the property after a snowfall.  They are so graceful and beautiful.

Hoping that you have a lovely week and remember to give your loved ones a hug!

  1. Sorry you can't fill your larder with venison. My BIL lives up in your parts and comments on seeing wolves quite frequently. I do believe they are there to stay.

  2. My dad went hunting too this weekend, but no more than foxed and geese.
We have no wolves in our part of the world luckely, so pets are save when outdoors. On the other hand it's not allowed to shoot deer though. They are a proteced game (in Holland, as far as I know it is allowed in the rest of Europe) and are only shot when there are too many deer in a certain part of the country.
Too bad for you to have to depend on your butcher now. I DO hope you buy ecological and "green" meat though....

  3. Our gun season opened today and so far we are void of a kill. We use every bit of what the lord provides for us, though I do can it instead of freezing it. I just trust my canning better than the freezer. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Sorry to hear it was a bust. I live in Oklahoma and we do not have wolves to deal with. Although my husband hasn't shot one yet. We have issue with wild pigs. They are so disruptive to the environment it's not good. And I don't believe I would want to eat them. I dropped by from Sew Many Ways and I will again. Take care.

    1. Thanks Kathleen and I am so glad you stopped by! Wild pigs?! I think I would rather deal with wolves...wild pigs can be nasty from what I have heard!

  5. I'm a non-meat eater (I just don't like the taste of most it, not because I have an issue with it-- though I do like to tease my husband's cousins in Wisconsin about killing the woodland creatures, only b/c it gets a good natured rise out of them), but I often wish there was a more economical way to procure meat for my family. I don't think I could hunt, but I think it is great if you can feed your family over the winter/year with the byproduct of your efforts. It must be so disappointing to be planning on that meat and to have it be a bust. I can't imagine! I hope next season is more productive for you!

    1. Thanks ClutterMama. Yes, it is wonderful when we have a freezer full from one season of hunting. Although the savings is significant when we are able to shoot a deer, the disappointment is we love the taste of venison far more than beef or pork.

  6. Oh that's a shame about the deer Debbie. I can understand your caution with the wolves though :)

  7. We aren't hunters, but I have been catching the Thanksgiving sales and stocking my freezer with turkeys this week. Before Christmas, I will stock up on hams.

    1. Oh Kristi, I plan on doing the same. This week the turkeys are on deep discount at 49 cents a pound!
