Well it has come and gone. I received the email last week that my box of books arrived safe at Barnes and Noble and were ready to be picked up. Between all the snow storms we had, I still managed to drive the 20 minutes to the mall where Barnes and Noble is located.
As I mentioned in this post, "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan was the book I was awarded to hand out. Quickly opening the box, I dove right into the top copy. Wanting to read the book prior to handing them out was something I wanted to do in case someone asked how the book was or what it was about.
Just FYI, it is worth the read. Very, very good. Actually a neighbor of mine had indicated to me that not only had he read the book but also listened to it on tape when driving on a trip. He liked it that much.
It was fun being part of such a worthwhile event. First people were hesitant when trying to give them something for free ..... which I found to be sad ..... but when they realized I didn't want anything from them, they gladly accepted a copy. I hope they enjoyed the story.
Happy reading and remember to give your loved ones a hug!
Good Afternoon Debbie, World Book Night was a wonderful idea. People were giving out free books here in Newcastle aswell. I do understand people being shy about accepting something free, although as you say, it is sad. Normally when you are handed something it is a leaflet telling you to visit this restaurant or that restaurant.
ReplyDeleteWell done you, for making that drive, it must have been very difficult for you. How is the snow? is there any sign of it disappearing yet.
Before I go, can I ask what the Worst Hard Time is about?
Have a lovely day.
Best Wishes
Daphne
Thanks Daphne! The snow is slowly disappearing but we still have at least 3 feet. The temperatures are suppose to reach 70F this weekend so hopefully we will lose a lot of it! The Worst Hard Time is about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl...a very good read. Have a wonderful day!
DeleteI was aware it was World Book Day, but the Night-part I didn't know. What a wonderful thing!! Wish it was here too. I missed the blog you told here that you would be a giver, so it was all new to me.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, LOVE books and I really think people should read more, so the handing out of books sounds just wonderful!!! When you give someone a book, do you have to ask if they read regularly or not??
And, how is the book?? I love historical novels, because it teaches me about other periods in time and how people lived then.
What are your favorite books??
Hi Bianca, no, it isn't required to ask the person if they are a reader or not but it is recommended to had them out in an area where there might not be many readers. The book is very good. It is about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the United States. I love historical novels and non-fiction books but any books are good books as far as I am concerned! LOL
DeleteSounds like a fun night!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to get a free
book.
M :)
Thanks Melinda!
